Raising Malawi

The Mercy James Centre (MJC) is Malawi’s first and only pediatric surgery and intensive care hospital, built by Raising Malawi and opened in 2017 at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre. This free public facility offers comprehensive care for infants and children requiring critical care or complex surgeries. With three operating theaters, the country’s only pediatric ICU, and a 50-bed ward, the MJC provides advanced medical treatment for the most vulnerable children.

Additionally, the hospital plays a key role in training pediatric surgeons, nurses, intensivists, and anesthesiologists, contributing to the improvement of healthcare in Malawi and across sub-Saharan Africa.

Temwa

Temwa operates in the Nkhata Bay North area of northern Malawi, a region marked by extreme poverty and isolation. Situated in a remote, mountainous area by Lake Malawi, it is home to about 55,000 residents. This locality suffers from a lack of governmental support and assistance from other non-governmental organizations, making Temwa’s efforts crucial in providing the necessary resources and training to help the community thrive. The organization has developed a highly effective approach that has consistently demonstrated impressive results, often doubling or even tripling crop yields from one harvest to the next. These improvements are not only significant but are also sustainable, as Tiyeni focuses on building healthy soils over time.

Rather than relying on incentives or external inputs to encourage the adoption of their farming techniques, Tiyeni responds to the growing demand from farmers seeking training in these methods. The effectiveness of their approach has led to rapid word-of-mouth promotion, resulting in a surge in requests for training that the organization is struggling to meet. This reflects the community’s recognition of the benefits of Tiyeni’s techniques and the growing interest in improving agricultural practices for better productivity and sustainability.

Orant Charities Africa

Orant Charities Africa is a fully African and Malawian NGO committed to addressing community challenges through local methods, with a strong emphasis on gender equality and women’s support in all programs. Since its founding, the organization has achieved significant milestones with limited resources. In 2014, Orant Charities acquired a health clinic in Kasese, Malawi, which had been severely damaged by storms. Initially, two clinicians and a team of five managed the clinic, treating 30,000 patients in their first year despite staffing and facility challenges.

Today, Orant Charities employs 50 individuals who oversee diverse projects in agriculture, business, education, healthcare, and water and sanitation. The Kasese Health Center is now recognized as one of Malawi’s cleanest and best-equipped rural medical facilities, with clinicians forming personal connections with patients. Orant Charities Africa is backed by Orant Charities United States, a private operating foundation aligned with its mission. This partnership provides free consulting and financial support, enabling Orant Charities Africa to maintain fundraising costs below 1% of its budget, thereby maximizing resources for community development.

Riseup Malawi

Riseup Malawi envisions a future where every child in Malawi has access to education and no child suffers from hunger. The organization’s mission focuses on eradicating generational poverty and hunger in rural areas through educational initiatives and sustainable interventions.
