Caritas

In the early 20th century, shortly before World War I, Caritas congresses began in Austria. Inspired by the German model, it was decided to create Caritas associations to coordinate aid efforts better. 

The primary mission of Caritas is to identify and address hardship, advocating for those who cannot speak for themselves. This mission entails respecting and protecting human life from conception to death. Caritas is committed to helping people in distress, regardless of background, religion, or gender, to enable them to lead dignified, self-determined lives.

American Austrian Foundation (AAF)

The American Austrian Foundation (AAF) was established in 1984 by a group of prominent Americans and Austrians, including David Rockefeller and Ambassador Milton Wolf, to strengthen ties between the two countries. Initially a bilateral effort, the foundation has evolved into a multilateral organization with international partnerships. It collaborates with renowned academic institutions such as Weill Cornell Medicine, the Medical University of Vienna, and Duke University, as well as cultural organizations like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

AAF is a public, non-profit organization incorporated in Delaware and holds 501(c)(3) status with the U.S. IRS. In 1995, to support its programs in Austria, the foundation established the Salzburg Stiftung of the AAF, a private non-profit with tax-exempt status in Austria. Through its various initiatives, the foundation promotes academic, artistic, and cultural exchange, strengthening international collaboration. 

Austrian Foundation Association

The Austrian Foundation Association, originally founded in 1996 as the “Association of Austrian Private Foundations (VÖP),” underwent a name change in 2019 when Dr. Cattina Leitner, LL.M. became president. The organization’s mission is to advocate for Austrian foundations, explaining their purpose and highlighting their positive impact on Austria’s economy. Through events and publications, the association aims to foster dialogue with the public and enhance understanding of the role foundations play in the country.

By maintaining close communication with foundations and businesses, the association stays informed about the challenges its members face and actively represents their interests to both the public and policymakers. Their goal is to work collaboratively with members to ensure that the legal framework governing private foundations is adapted to meet future needs, thereby strengthening Austria’s position as a business-friendly environment for such entities.

Teach For Austria

Teach For Austria, a long-standing partner of the Swarovski Foundation since 2014, aims to provide all children in Austria with equal access to quality education, regardless of their socio-economic background. The Swarovski Foundation has supported this mission by helping the organization recruit and train university graduates. These graduates work directly with children in disadvantaged schools, helping to bridge educational gaps and improve opportunities for students from underprivileged communities. The collaboration focuses on addressing inequality in education and ensuring that children from all backgrounds have the chance to succeed. By empowering motivated graduates to teach and inspire students, Teach For Austria plays a critical role in transforming the lives of many children across the country.

Anna Lindh Foundation

In December 2011, the Austrian Institute for International Affairs (oiip) was elected as the Head of Network (HoN) for the Austrian ALF network, a role focused on fostering intellectual, cultural, and civil society exchange among Austrian member organizations. This network is part of the Anna Lindh Foundation, which promotes intercultural dialogue across the Mediterranean to combat mistrust and polarization. The Austrian network includes over 60 members, mainly civil society and public organizations, as well as individuals involved in politics, culture, and education. 

The oiip provides advice and support to members, particularly regarding participation in the Anna Lindh Foundation’s calls. Membership is open to a broad range of organizations and individuals, including NGOs, public and private foundations, for-profit organizations with socially sustainable goals, social entrepreneurs, and local or regional actors. The common thread among all members is a commitment to the Foundation’s mission, which is grounded in pluralistic, democratic, and multilateral values. The network fosters collaboration and dialogue, aiming to enhance civil society’s role in promoting intercultural understanding and cooperation.
